Another Friday, another reason why every business leader SHOULD be a Feminist!

Yes, it’s that time again. Friday has approached and here at Wellbeing with Cari, we are counting down our top 10 reasons why every business should adapt their mindset and put equality and diversity at the forefront of their organisation.

This Friday, we have our ninth reason …

What is Feminism?

  1. You do not have to be a woman to be a Feminist
  2. Feminism is not about elevating women above men
  3. Feminism is a movement that is in favour of equality and inclusiveness
  4. If every organisation is run by a Feminist, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to change the current leadership – maybe just their thinking

No.9 – Feminist Leaders are equality driven Vs privilege centred

Why does it matter to have an organisation that drives for equality? First of all, because it’s the right thing to do. Anyone who doesn’t think that’s the right thing to do will not much like the rest of this blog, so please leave now, and don’t slam the door on your way out….now all you lovely people left reading, who agree that we need to treat people with dignity, respect, compassion, kindness and basically ‘do unto them as we would have done unto ourselves’ – well, for us lot, this is clearly a no-brainer. But it also delivers benefits.

What am I talking about? Well, Tom Peters (more than 20 years ago) was telling organisations to wake up to the importance of putting women in top jobs…why? because he was a campaigner for women’s rights? No, he said there were other far more qualified people who could do that job, no research shows more buying decisions are made by women than men. Women are, in almost all domains the main decision makers – including in the realm of adventure equipment! Check out marketing expert Faith Popcorn’s book, ‘Evolution’. Any organisation selling a product should surely have the type of people on their board that may actually buy or use the product? I mean, it’s because men ran feminine hygiene companies that women have spent 1/12 of their lives in discomfort! And then there were wings! But that aside, the same is true for every other protected characteristic – Feminism is not about women, it’s about equality to me that must, therefore encompass age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation. And what’s more, fair treatment is the law!

Do you feel that your team could be more diverse and inclusive?

So, let me ask this to the individuals or committees in charge of recruitment for their organisation – is your organisation as diverse as possible?

Do you feel as if the business processes in place could be better adapted if you were to employ those that would actually buy your products/ services?

If you’re unsure of any of this, perhaps you may want to reconsider the way you look at diversity and inclusivity within your business…

Just some food for thought!

Next time…

That concludes No.9 of the reasons why every leader SHOULD be a Feminist… our next blog in the series will be published on the 05/03/21!

Wishing you all a lovely and relaxing weekend!
